Biography

I started playing with clay and melting bottles during my early teens in my mom's "ceramics" studio in our Calgary basement. I later studied at the Alberta College of Art, where I became interested in painting and printmaking as well as pottery. After my wife, Martha and I graduated in 1976, we moved to Quadra Island and set up our first studio. After a few years we were able to purchase our own property - perched on the bluffs overlooking Georgia Strait - where we converted a 1905 farmhouse into our studio.

Artist Statement

I work primarily in stoneware and earthenware and make both functional pottery and ceramic sculpture. My imagery often originates from the human figure and the face. I am less interested in realism than creating unusual, distorted or exaggerated characters and situations. The work can be described as colourful, humorous and expressionistic.
