Norene Schmuck is a mosaic artist who describes herself as a "painter working with plates". Each composition is created from a vast palette of broken dishes from her huge collection. Sometimes the art is inspired by the patterns of old china and there is more than a touch of whimsy here. Subject matter is diverse: fantastical fishes, portraits of peacocks, animals and mosaic mandalas are all part of her artistic progeny. Installations in kitchens as backsplashes or frescoes for wall hanging, outdoor garden pieces are others. Her work has found its way into private collections in the U.S. and Eastern Canada and won a Juror's choice award at the 2003 Sooke Fine Arts show.
